Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Frankie Dettori’s Last Ride
Riding Free Wind in farewell to the world’s best race
The jockey Frankie
He announced long ago that this 34th participation in the Arc would be his last, and invitations to reconsider immediately poured in. Lanfranco Dettori, known as Frankie Dettori, one of the world’s most famous and highly regarded jockeys, nearing the age of 53, has left many marks of his immense class even in the most anticipated and spectacular horse race held in Europe.
Dettori’s first appearance at the Arc de Triomphe
It happened in October 1988, riding Roushayd, where he finished twelfth, but he would more than make up for it in the following years, winning a total of six times with Lammtarra (1995), Sakhee (2001), Marienbard (2002), Golden Horn (2015), and Enable (2017-2018).
In addition to these victories, there were six more podium finishes, including Enable (2nd in 2019) and Torquator Tasso third the previous year.
The outsider Free Wind
She is a five-year-old Irish bay filly, the daughter of Galileo, and runs in the colors of George Strawbridge. She has raced eleven times to date with 6 victories and two second-place finishes, showing no problems covering distances even exceeding 2400 meters proposed by the Parisian best racehorses. Her odds assigned by bookmakers are high, which places Free Wind among the less likely contenders for the prize, but of course, Frankie’s ride can have a significant impact.
The iconic leap
It’s the iconic leap, captured in hundreds of frames, made by Frankie Dettori at the end of victorious races, jumping to the ground on his feet from the saddle of the winning horse. Thousands of fans of this incredible jockey are hoping to witness, on Sunday, October 1st, his umpteenth magic moment on the Longchamp track and see him celebrate in his unique way. It would be the perfect farewell to his last ride in the world’s best race.
