Michael Jung Leads Individual Eventing After Cross-Country Test at Paris 2024

After the cross-country phase, Great Britain leads the team event, with Michael Jung in first place individually.

On the second day of the Eventing competition, the course proved to be as challenging and lengthy as always. The distance to be covered was 5,149 meters with a speed of 570 meters per minute. The allotted time was 9:02 minutes, with an ultimate time limit of 18:04.

The ground jury comprised Klingspor C. from Sweden (president), Stevenson from the United States, and Le Sauce X. from France.

Individually, the German Michael Jung delivered an impeccable performance riding the 2008 gelding, Hannoveraner Verband’s Chimpunk FRH. Jung completed the dressage with a penalty score of 17.80 and incurred no penalties in the cross-country phase. In second place is Britain’s Collet with London 52, who maintained her excellent dressage score of 17.50, marred only by 0.80 points in the cross-country phase, bringing her total to 18.30. Third place went to Australia, with Cristopher Burton riding the 2010 gelding Shadow Man.

The provisional team standings after the second phase place Great Britain in the lead (82.50), followed by France in second place (87.20) and Japan in third (93.80).

The Italian Eventing team made their presence felt, finishing with three strong performances on the second Olympic day.

Pietro Sandei and Rubis de Prere, along with Evelina Bertoli and Fidjy des Melezes, both achieved clear rounds with time penalties. Giovanni Ugolotti and Swirly Temptress had a refusal at the combination towards the end of the course, causing some time loss for the Italian rider.

Overall, the Italian team had a solid performance, climbing three positions in the provisional team standings to 13th place after the second day.

Bertoli remains the best Italian performer of the day, riding Fidjy des Melezes. A slight delay resulted in 6.40 penalty points, bringing her total to 33 after the two phases, placing her 19th in the overall individual standings.

Sandei incurred 14 penalties for exceeding the time limit. Sandei replaced Emiliano Portale with Future, while Ugolotti and Swirly, who performed excellently in dressage yesterday, faced a minor setback with a refusal at the exit of the combination (obstacle no. 21).
