Las Vegas, NV – November 16, 2024 – Young rider Paige Walkenbach secured a decisive victory at the prestigious WCE Medal Final during the Las Vegas National Horse Show. This event, presented by the California Professional Horsemen’s Association (CPHA) Foundation, serves as a highly competitive stage for junior and amateur equestrians, featuring three challenging phases that test skill and precision.

After consistent participation in previous years, including a third-place finish and then a second-place finish, Walkenbach finally claimed the top spot. “I come back every year for this class; it’s always a great way to end the year,” Walkenbach shared, clearly emotional after her victory. Her name will now be engraved on the Barbara Worth Oakford Trophy, joining the prestigious list of past champions.

The final was divided into three phases, beginning on Friday at the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa with a power-and-speed jumper class focused on equitation. Out of 27 participants, those who completed the opening round returned on Saturday for the second phase. By the end of these two rounds, Walkenbach was in second place with a combined score of 169.25. Leading the standings was amateur rider Jayme Omand, with a score of 171.5.

The final round was conducted in reverse order of the standings, increasing the suspense and anticipation. As each of the top 10 riders entered the ring, several struggled, knocking down rails and losing points. Walkenbach, riding her new partner Bigtalu G Z, a 12-year-old Zangersheide gelding, delivered a flawless round. In contrast, Omand had an unfortunate rail down, which sealed the victory for Walkenbach.

“The courses were definitely tough, requiring everyone to step up,” Walkenbach remarked. Coached by James Hagman of Elvenstar, she credited her recent experience at similar high-level competitions for helping her maintain her composure. “I just wanted to focus on having a good flow and keeping the rails up,” she added. This focused approach proved successful, earning her the judges’ favor and the overall win.

In addition to the champion title, Walkenbach was awarded a variety of prizes, including a pair of DeNiro Salento boots provided by Outdoor Outfitters, a CPHA Foundation travel bag, a carnation wreath, a selection of cupcakes, and a cooler sponsored by DaMoor’s Tack & Feed. Jayme Omand, who finished in second place, received the Highest-Placing Amateur Award. Completing the top four were Brooke O’Malley, who took third place with her mount Quijote, and Alexandra Lipacis, who finished fourth aboard Go For It B.

Walkenbach’s triumph with Bigtalu G Z is even more remarkable considering the pair’s brief history together. “I only started riding him last week at Desert Horse Park. I thought it would be a great opportunity to get to know him better here,” Walkenbach explained. Despite their limited time together, the duo showed exceptional harmony and skill, appearing as a seasoned team in the ring.

The 2024 Las Vegas National Horse Show wraps up today, November 17, following a week of top-tier competition, including the Marshall + Sterling/USHJA National Championships. Walkenbach’s victory highlights her talent and determination, positioning her as a rising star in the American equestrian scene.
