Navigating Emotions and Results: The Crucial Role of Parents in Sports and Education
The Pressure of Results in Today’s World
In an increasingly competitive world, young people face demanding challenges both in school and in sports. The pressure to achieve results can heavily impact their emotional well-being, and this is where the role of parents becomes crucial.
The Impact of a Results-Oriented Society
“We live in a society that measures a person’s worth based on results rather than performance,” explains Monia Carnevali, a Health and Parent Coach. This approach can make adolescents feel even more uncomfortable with the speed at which they are expected to prove their abilities, both in school and in sports. The consequence? If you have results, you have value; if you don’t, you don’t. This mindset can significantly affect a young person’s self- esteem, self-awareness, and sense of self-efficacy.
Challenges Faced by Parents: Managing Emotions in Times of Stress
In her professional routine, Carnevali frequently encounters parents who struggle with managing their children’s emotional states, particularly when they are under pressure to perform in competitions or exams that do not yield the expected results. “Anger, disappointment, frustration, and a sense of unease often disrupt the parent-child relationship,” she notes. These are common issues that parents bring to Carnevali when seeking her support.
“Beyond the Obstacle”: A Path to Personalized Parenting
Through her Parent Coaching program, “Beyond the Obstacle,” Carnevali guides parents on a journey of awareness. This program equips them with practical tools to better handle daily conflicts with their children. “The goal is to develop a ‘personalized parenting style’ and to experience daily life and the rules they set without guilt or discomfort,” says Carnevali. It’s about reclaiming their role as parents and creating a more nurturing and satisfying relationship with their children.
Effective Communication: A Key to Success in Equestrian Sports
In the realm of equestrian sports, effective communication between parents and their children is paramount. “Implementing effective communication, built on more functional linguistic and behavioral patterns, and employing strategies that use the powerful tools of emotional intelligence are crucial for achieving the results parents seek,” explains Carnevali. Additionally, building the child’s self-esteem and autonomy is essential, as these are key to developing the sense of self-efficacy necessary for success in both sports and life as adults.
The Path to Becoming a Parent Coach
As Carnevali tells the parents she works with, “Nothing is lost! You can always start anew and embark on a new path towards your goals.” The ultimate aim, which unites all parents, is the desire to see their children happy, fulfilled, autonomous, and satisfied in whatever they choose to pursue, whether it be in their studies or in sports.
Carnevali speaks from experience, having been a student, instructor, and now the mother of a teenager who competes at a high level in equestrian sports. “What I teach the parents I coach every day is how to become true allies of their children—or as I like to say, true Parent Coaches!”
