Mathieu Bourdeaud’Hui: rising star in show jumping
Geneva, Switzerland – At one of the most prestigious equestrian events in the world, the young and talented Belgian show jumper Mathieu Bourdeaud’Huireflected on his experience competing in the Under-25 division. Despite being just 23 years old, Mathieu has already demonstrated remarkable potential and poise, and his journey in the sport continues to inspire many.
“It’s amazing. I really enjoyed the show,” he shared, a bright smile on his face as he described his first time competing in Geneva. “The atmosphere is incredible, and everything around here is just perfect. It’s a truly special experience.”
A weekend of learning
While Mathieu achieved commendable results during the weekend, including a fourth-place finish on both days, he admitted there was room for improvement. “I lost it a bit in the jump-off today. I could’ve won, but that’s how it goes,” he said candidly. However, his positive outlook prevailed: “One day you win, one day you learn. This was a great experience, and I’m excited for what’s to come.”
From humble beginnings to a promising career
Mathieu’s love for horses began early. “I started riding when I was six. My parents weren’t into horses, but I would see them in the fields near our house. I would go there every day, feed them, scratch them, and beg my mom to take me to a stable,” he recalled. His persistence paid off, and by age 12, he had purchased his first horse from Wilm Vermeir, marking the start of his career.
The young rider credits much of his growth to the support he’s received along the way. “The Young Riders Academy has been instrumental in my journey,” he said. “I’ve met so many important people and gained invaluable experience. They’ve given me great opportunities to compete and improve.”
Riding for Krismar Stables
Another key milestone in Mathieu’s career came when he began riding for Krismar Stables. “I met Alexy Callewaert, the daughter of my boss, while working for Krismar,” Mathieu shared. “After about a year and a half together, I started riding for them full-time. It’s been fantastic. They support me in keeping top horses for competition before selling them, allowing me to grow and develop alongside them.”
Among the horses he rides, Oscar holds a special place. “Oscar has been incredible. Winning the Grand Prix at the Sunshine Tour last autumn was a huge breakthrough for me. It gave me the confidence to aim even higher,” he said.
Eyes on the future
Mathieu recently competed in his first five-star event at Jumping Mechelen, a milestone he had been eagerly anticipating. “It was such an amazing experience to compete in a five-star show, and doing it in my hometown made it even more special,” he said. “Jumping at that level is tough, but it’s the kind of challenge I’ve been working toward. I’m really proud of how it went.”
Now, Mathieu is focused on gaining more experience at the senior level. “This year is all about stepping up, building confidence, and learning from every opportunity. There’s still so much to achieve, and I’m ready to work hard for it,” he said.
Guided by expertise
Mathieu trains under the watchful eye of Mark Van Dijck, uncle of the accomplished rider Gilles Thomas. “Mark has been a tremendous influence. His system aligns perfectly with my way of riding. He gives me so much confidence and always pushes me to believe in myself,” Mathieu shared.
When asked for advice he would pass on to aspiring riders, Mathieu shared what Mark often tells him: “Go for it. Believe in yourself, and don’t hold back.”
A bright future
With his natural talent, relentless determination, and strong support system, Mathieu Bourdeaud’Hui is undoubtedly a rider to watch. As he sets his sights on senior competitions and builds toward his Olympic dream, one thing is clear: the young Belgian is just getting started.
