King Edward, the Small but Mighty Horse Reigning over Equestrian Sports
Barcelona, October 3rd, 2024 – The CSIO Barcelona, one of the top events in the international equestrian scene, brings together 92 riders and 143 horses from around the world. Among them, two figures stand out: Swedish rider Henrik von Eckermann and his exceptional horse King Edward. Their reputation precedes them, having led the world rankings for two consecutive years and achieved victories like the last two World Cups and the 2022 World Championship in Denmark.
King Edward, a 14-year-old gelding born in Belgium, defies the usual expectations for show jumping horses. He competes without horseshoes and stands at just 1.65 meters tall, smaller than the average show jumper. Yet, his compact size does nothing to hinder his success: “It’s as if he grows with the height of the jumps,” says von Eckermann. “Off the course, he’s incredibly calm, but in the arena, he transforms. If I had to compare him to a football player, I’d say he’s like Messi: small, but with extraordinary talent.”
This morning, Henrik von Eckermann and King Edward stepped into the Olympic arena at the Real Club de Polo in Barcelona, showcasing the deep bond they’ve built over time. Their journey has been marked by countless triumphs, but also by a special relationship. “King Edward and I have grown together,” von Eckermann explains. “Our connection is based on mutual respect. You can’t force a horse; you have to find a balance. If the horse doesn’t want to do something, you might get him to comply once, twice, three times… but not much more. That’s what makes this sport so unique: horses aren’t machines, they have emotions and instincts. King Edward is the best horse in the world, but tomorrow he could finish 50th. And that’s the beauty of it.”
Despite his strength and precision on the course, King Edward has a softer side. He is always accompanied by a plush Lion King toy, a gift from his groom, Louise Barraud, who travels with him everywhere. “He’s the king, so no other stuffed toy would do,” says Louise, who has built a relationship of trust with King Edward over the past five years.
At CSIO Barcelona, King Edward and Henrik von Eckermann continue their remarkable journey. Whether they are competing or spending quiet moments in the Dutch countryside, this duo is the perfect example of how passion and a deep connection can overcome any obstacle, even physical limitations.
