At Fieracavalli Verona, one of the most prestigious equestrian events of the year, Horseshowjumping.tv had the privilege of speaking with Kevin Staut, a French showjumping icon who has carved a name for himself in the sport with a unique blend of perseverance, talent, and dedication. From humble beginnings to an illustrious career at the top of the equestrian world, Kevin’s journey is a testament to hard work, adaptability, and passion.
In our exclusive interview, Kevin shared his experiences, insights, and hopes for the future, offering a rare glimpse into the life of a rider who has consistently pushed boundaries while staying true to the core values of the sport.
A Late Start, Fueled by Passion
For many elite riders, their love for horses and competition begins at an early age, often fostered by a family deeply rooted in equestrian traditions. But Kevin’s story is different. “I didn’t start really young to ride,” he admitted. “I was twelve years old, which is late compared to most professionals. I wasn’t from a horse family, and my initial interest wasn’t even in the sport—it was in the animal itself. I was fascinated by horses.”
It wasn’t until Kevin was 18 that he began to develop a competitive spirit. “As a junior and young rider, I had no idea I could reach the high level,” he said. “It seemed impossible at the time. I rode because I loved it, not because I thought I could make a career out of it.”
Despite his late start, Kevin’s passion and determination set him on a path that would eventually lead to the pinnacle of the sport. “What kept me going was my love for horses and my curiosity about what I could achieve with them,” he shared.
Kraque Boom: A Horse That Changed Everything
Kevin’s big break came in 2009 when he won the European Championships with Kraque Boom, a horse owned by his grandfather. The victory was a defining moment in his career. “That week was magical,” Kevin recalled. “I was really an outsider, there to help the French team. It was my second European Championship with Kraque Boom, and everything just fell into place.”
The win wasn’t just a personal triumph; it opened doors for Kevin on the international stage. “After that, I started receiving calls from sponsors. It was the beginning of building a system to sustain myself at the highest level year after year.”
Kraque Boom, the horse that propelled Kevin to stardom, remains a cherished part of his life. “He’s retired now and still on the farm,” Kevin said fondly. “He had a short career but was incredibly efficient. I owe so much to him.”
The Rider-Horse Connection: The Key to Success
A central theme of Kevin’s philosophy is the profound connection between rider and horse. “Behind every partnership is a unique bond,” he explained. “To succeed at
the highest level, you have to be a good trainer and create a system that works for each horse. It’s not just about riding; it’s about management, training, and understanding the horse’s individual needs.”
Kevin emphasized that this connection goes beyond technical ability. “The complicity you create with the horse can take you as far as talent and money. That’s why this sport is still so exciting for me. Even if you can’t invest as much as others, the time and effort you put in with your horse can make all the difference.”
He also highlighted the dual role riders play. “Unlike racing, where there’s a separate trainer and jockey, in showjumping, we do both. It’s a global approach that requires skill, patience, and adaptability.”
Preserving the Legacy of the Sport
As a prominent member of the International Jumping Riders Club (IJRC), Kevin is deeply committed to preserving the sport’s traditions and values. “We need to defend the shows that mean something to the riders,” he said passionately. “Events like the Nations Cup aren’t just competitions—they’re part of our history. Riding for your country is a feeling unlike any other.”
While Kevin acknowledged the benefits of new tours and formats, he stressed the importance of maintaining a balance. “Tours like the GCT bring a lot of money and attract new audiences, which is great. But we can’t let these overshadow traditional events like the Nations Cup. These
shows offer young riders a platform to showcase their talent and create a legacy for the sport.”
Kevin and his colleagues at the IJRC work closely with the FEI to ensure that traditional events remain a priority. “We provide feedback on what riders, grooms, and owners need from a show. It’s not just about maintaining traditions—it’s about ensuring the future of the sport is healthy and inclusive.”
Dealing with Setbacks: The Mental Game
Like any sport, showjumping is full of highs and lows, and Kevin is no stranger to setbacks. “At the beginning of my career, I didn’t handle losing well,” he admitted.
“In this sport, you lose more often than you win. That can be tough to accept, especially when you’re young and ambitious.”

Over time, Kevin developed a healthier mindset. “I’ve learned that setbacks are part of the process. It’s normal to be disappointed, but you can’t let it destroy your spirit or your relationships with your team. The key is to stay motivated and work harder for the next opportunity.”
Kevin also pointed out the unique advantage of showjumping. “Unlike many sports where careers are short, we can compete at the highest level for decades if we stay healthy and motivated. That perspective helps me stay focused on the long game.”
The Motivation to Keep Going
Despite his many achievements, Kevin’s passion for the sport remains undiminished. “Every season feels like a fresh start,” he said. “Every horse is a new story. Even if you’ve ridden the same horse for years, they change over time, and you have to adapt your approach. That’s what keeps it exciting for me.”
When asked about his ultimate goal, Kevin didn’t hesitate. “I want to be world number one again. It’s not just about the ranking—it’s a sign that you’re consistent across all aspects of the sport, from championships to indoor and outdoor events. To be world number one means you’ve mastered the mental, physical, and emotional demands of this sport across different settings and formats. It’s a benchmark of excellence.”
He elaborated further, saying, “When I achieved that milestone in 2010, it was like a dream come true, but I don’t see it as a one-time achievement. I see it as a challenge to push myself, to show that I can maintain that level of performance even as the sport evolves and new riders enter the scene. Being at the top isn’t just about technical skill—it’s about strategy, adaptability, and consistency.”
For Kevin, regaining the world number one spot isn’t just a personal goal; it’s a symbol of his dedication to the sport and his ability to inspire others. “I want to prove to myself and to the younger generation that longevity in this sport is possible. It’s not about chasing glory for the sake of it—it’s about setting an example, showing what’s achievable through hard work, and leaving a legacy that I can be proud of.”
With this vision driving him, Kevin’s focus remains sharp as ever, and his determination to reach the top again is a testament to his enduring love for the sport.
A Champion with a Vision
Kevin Staut’s journey is a story of resilience, humility, and an unwavering commitment to his craft. From his early days as an outsider to his rise as one of the sport’s leading figures, he has consistently pushed boundaries while staying true to the values that make showjumping unique.
As he continues to inspire the next generation of riders, Kevin remains a beacon of what can be achieved with passion, hard work, and a deep connection to the horse. “We have the luxury of doing something we truly love,” he said. “As long as I feel that way, I’ll keep going.”
At Fiera Cavalli Verona, Kevin left us with a parting thought that encapsulates his philosophy: “This sport is a privilege. It’s not just about winning—it’s about the journey, the partnerships, and the legacy we leave behind.”
For Kevin Staut, the journey continues, and the future looks brighter than ever.
