Francis Derwin Triumphs in 3* 1.55m Grand Prix at Andalucía October Tour
In a thrilling finale to the Andalucía October Tour, Francis Derwin claimed victory in the 3* 1.55m Grand Prix, riding his exceptional mare in a performance that showcased the bond and trust they have built over the years. Held at the Sunshine Tour in Cádiz, the 3* event drew a competitive field, but Derwin’s skill and patience shone through as he topped the leaderboard in this prestigious final. Speaking after the event, the young Irish rider reflected on the journey that brought him and his horse to this standout moment.
A Journey of Patience and Trust
Derwin’s partnership with his mare began when she was just five years old, and he took a measured, careful approach to developing her potential. Looking back on their early days, Derwin emphasized how they gave her the time she needed to grow into a top jumper.
“We bought her when she was five, and I rode her all along,” said Derwin. “She was always very careful as a young horse, so we took our time with her a bit.” His patience paid off as the mare matured into an impressive competitor. “She was always a very good jumper, but only in the last couple of months, she stepped up and started excelling in these classes. So it’s great to be able to win one,” he added, clearly proud of her progress.
A Course Suited to Their Strengths
The 3* Grand Prix course offered technical challenges, testing both horse and rider in terms of skill and control. Derwin was thrilled with the course design, which he felt was perfectly tailored to his horse’s style.
“It was a lovely course,” said Derwin. “I think there was the perfect amount of clear rounds—it couldn’t have been any better.” The jump-off posed additional demands with its tight turns and precise angles. “The first few jumps were a bit straight, but then it was twisty across the middle,” he explained. “That suited my horse because she maybe hasn’t got the biggest stride, so it suits her to be turning a bit. She’s very fast,” he said with a smile, clearly admiring her abilities.
The win in this 3* Grand Prix event reflected not only the years of work between Derwin and his mare, but also the bond they share as a team.
A Key Partnership with Oakland Stables and Mentor Darragh Kenny
Derwin’s journey has also been significantly influenced by his partnership with Oakland Stables and guidance from his mentor, Irish showjumper Darragh Kenny. What began as a short-term bursary evolved into a valuable mentorship that helped shape Derwin’s career.
“A few years ago, I got a bursary to go to Darragh for a few weeks, and I went and really enjoyed it,” Derwin shared. “My dad called him, maybe three years ago, and asked if I could go over for the winter during the week. So I went, and then I went for the last three seasons. He’s been a brilliant help to me and couldn’t do any more for me.”
Family Support: A Strong Foundation
Supporting Derwin every step of the way has been his father, who plays a major role in his son’s success. Known for his dedication to Francis’s career, his father has often made sacrifices to help his son reach new heights in the sport.
“My dad does so much for me,” said Derwin. “The business is selling horses, but he’s gotten so much into the show jumping that he’s kept horses for me just to try and get me going in the sport. Horses he could have sold, he’s kept for me,” he said with evident gratitude. “It’s brilliant. I can’t thank him enough.”
A Triumphant End to the Sunshine Tour
The 3* 1.55m Grand Prix win at the Sunshine Tour was a crowning achievement for Derwin, showcasing his hard work, the support of his family, and the expert guidance he’s received along the way. With his patient approach, commitment to his horse, and an unshakeable support system, Francis Derwin has firmly established himself as a rising star on the international stage. This win signals that he’s just getting started, with a bright future ahead in the world of show jumping.
