Filippo Bassan: A Rising Star in Italian Show Jumping

At just 30 years old, Italian show jumper Filippo Bassan is quickly making a name for himself on the international stage. Based in Padova, where he runs his own stables, Filippo is deeply involved in both competitive riding and the development of young horses. Known for his precision and dedication, he has achieved consistent results in top-level events. This year, Filippo’s journey took him to the Morocco Royal Tour, where he added another milestone to his growing career.
“She’s My Top Horse”
At the heart of Filippo’s success is his trusted 12-year-old mare, Cerruti, with whom he shares a deep bond.
“She’s my top horse,” Filippo said. “We’ve had an excellent year together, with consistent podium finishes, including a Nations Cup victory in Athens. Cerruti always gives her best, no matter the competition.”
Building such a strong partnership took time and patience. Filippo recounted their journey:
“We got her when she was seven, thanks to my owner Roberta Manzelli. It took about a year and a half to really establish a connection. She’s incredibly talented but has a strong personality, so we progressed carefully. Now, she’s at the peak of her career, and our bond is stronger than ever.”
When asked if Cerruti is his horse of a lifetime, Filippo smiled.
“She’s definitely the horse that has given me the most consistent results,” he said. “But every horse I’ve worked with holds a special place in my heart. Watching their progress and seeing the results of our hard work is always rewarding.”
Developing Future Champions
Beyond his competition schedule, Filippo is deeply committed to developing young horses, which he sees as the foundation of success in show jumping.
“Young horses are the future,” he explained. “Building a strong bond with them from an early age is essential for creating lasting partnerships.”
Filippo currently has several promising young horses in his program, ranging from recently backed three- and four-year-olds to five-year-olds preparing to compete at higher levels.
“I’m fortunate to have a fantastic team of grooms, riders, and trainers who help with their development,” he said. “Together, we create a balanced training plan that respects the horse’s growth and potential.”
Guidance and Support
Filippo credits much of his progress to the mentorship he has received over the years. Currently, he is working closely with renowned trainer Marco Porro.
“Marco has been a huge influence,” Filippo said. “His guidance has helped me better understand my horses and refine their training. His methods are gradual and respectful, and the results speak for themselves.”
Looking Ahead
As the season draws to a close, Filippo has his sights set on finishing strong.
“My short-term goal is to do well in upcoming competitions, particularly the indoor events,” he said. “After a brief rest for the horses, we’ll start preparing for next year, likely beginning with the Spanish circuit.”
With his talent, dedication, and a solid team behind him, Filippo Bassan is poised to continue his rise in the world of show jumping—one partnership at a time.
