Equestrian sustainability: updates from the European Equestrian Federation
In recent years, sustainability has emerged as a fundamental issue not only for the environment but also for the future of equestrian sports. The European Equestrian Federation (EEF) has recently shared important updates on its sustainability strategy, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the environmental challenges facing this sector.
Sustainability as a necessity
The equestrian sector, like many others, faces significant environmental challenges that require immediate and strategic action. During the EEF General Assembly, a representative from the Finnish Equestrian Federation presented a virtuous example of a holistic sustainability strategy. This approach not only aims to monitor ongoing efforts but also serves as a model for other federations, highlighting how sustainable practices can be effectively implemented.
Why equestrian sustainability matters
Simply put, sustainability in equestrianism means ensuring that this sport can continue to thrive in the future. This involves operating in ways that protect the environment, the welfare of horses, and the safety of the people involved. Adopting sustainable practices is essential for maintaining the health of our planet and resources, as well as for ensuring an inclusive and safe participation environment.
The key focus areas of the EEF’s sustainability strategy include:
- Horse Welfare: Ensuring that the horse remains at the center of our activities, with its well-being maintained at the highest levels.
- Environment protection: Protecting and nurturing the environment to ensure access to a favorable climate for both humans and horses.
- People safety: Developing and caring for individuals in our sport, promoting an open and inclusive work environment that provides safety and support to all.
A webinar to support the equestrian community
To assist stakeholders in the equestrian sector in developing their own sustainability strategies, the European Equestrian Federation will host a series of webinars titled “Making Strides in Sustainability.” These online sessions are designed to inspire, educate, and provide a platform for exchanging ideas on implementing sustainable practices.
The next webinar will take place on Tuesday, October 1, from 14:30 to 15:30 CET. During this session, the new “Sustainability Strategy Creator” will be introduced, providing practical guidance on how to develop an effective sustainability strategy.
