The horse has been an important animal and played a key role across the ages – including in Greek mythology. In fact according to the legend, there were two magnificent horses Balius and Xanthus who were the offspring of the harpy Podarge and the West wind, Zephyrus as well as both immortal. King Peleus of Phtia received the two horses as a wedding gift when Peleus wed the Ocean goddess Thetis. Peleus later gave the horses to his son Achilles. Balius comes from the word spotted while Xanthus means reddish brown. For more, see here: http://mitologia.dossier.net/
