A Passion for Equestrian Sports: An Inspiring Interview with Faleh Swead Al Ajami from Wathnan Jumping Team

Recently, I had the opportunity to chat with Faleh Swead Al Ajami, an enthusiastic rider from Qatar who is already making a name for himself in the equestrian scene as a key member of the newly formed Wathnan Jumping Team. Launched in June 2024, this ambitious team has its sights set not only on qualifying for the upcoming Los Angeles Olympics but also on competing in prestigious events like the Asian Games.
Faleh’s dedication shines through in his work with four remarkable horses. Two are fresh faces in the sport, still finding their stride, while the other two are seasoned competitors. With great pride, Faleh talks about watching the youngsters grow and evolve. “Currently, they’re participating in three-star events, and I’ve witnessed their journey from tiny classes to where they are now. It’s incredibly rewarding to see that progress,” he says, his passion evident.
The bond between a rider and their horses is crucial, and for Faleh, it’s a relationship built on love and dedication. “Honestly, I spend more time with my horses than with my friends. Half of my day is dedicated to them, and they have a special place in my heart. It’s really like a love relationship,” he shares, painting a vivid picture of their connection.
Training is the heartbeat of Faleh’s daily routine. He kicks off his mornings working before devoting his afternoons to riding. “I usually start around half-past one and work with my four horses until about 6 or 6:30. After riding, I check on them and do a night check before wrapping up my day,” he explains, showcasing his commitment to nurturing these incredible animals.
Faleh is also excited about the evolution of equestrian sports in Qatar. “The sport has grown tremendously, not just in equestrian but overall. Since we hosted the Asian Games in 2006, there’s been significant investment from the government and the local community. Now, we hold four five-star events every month and a half, which is fantastic for our growth as riders,” he emphasizes, his enthusiasm contagious.
The interview took place at Al Shaqab, a venue that fills Faleh with pride. “This venue is truly one of the best in the world. It boasts top-notch facilities for the horses, including a large clinic and a spa. It feels like a paradise for them,” he enthuses, highlighting the sprawling 20 fields and nearly 200 accommodations specifically designed for Arabian horses.
Faleh also opened up about the prestigious shows significant to Qatari riders, particularly the Olympics. “It’s everyone’s dream to be ready for it and to aim for a win,” he remarks, his eyes lighting up at the thought of competing on such a grand stage.
Faleh’s journey is a testament to his dedication and love for equestrian sports. With such unwavering passion and the support of his community, it’s clear that the future is bright for him and the Wathnan Jumping Team. Their aspirations are not just dreams; they are a testament to the spirit of the sport and the relentless pursuit of excellence.
